This online course with novelist and memoirist Lily Dunn for 12 writers will focus on writing from our own life and how to tell our personal stories. The course will be available online throughout the month of September, giving you the flexibility to sign in and take part at times that suit you.  Many people are interested in expressing their experience through writing and Lily Dunn provides an expert hand, guiding participants through the many different ways in which we can record our own experiences through storytelling.

Would you like to explore, for example, what it’s been like living under the threat of this pandemic or what it feels like now that lockdown restrictions are being lifted? Perhaps this period of reflection has inspired you to have a stab at writing memoir or autobiography?

This four-week online course will revolve around set teaching assignments, writing exercises and peer review feedback, as well as two opportunities for feedback from your tutor. Using the free and easy-to-use Slack platform, you will have access to an online community of fellow writers throughout the month.

Creative nonfiction uses literary technique to record factually accurate narratives. It is an increasingly popular genre and art form in a world that is looking for deeper meaning in its narratives. Along with writing prompts to get the writing juices flowing, we will discuss how fictional technique can be applied to nonfiction in order to make it more compelling. This course is open to beginners and experienced writers.

Lily Dunn is a novelist and memoirist. Her first novel Shadowing the Sun was published by Portobello Books (2007) and she is currently finishing her memoir, STARMAN, essays from which have been published by many publications. She has become a regular contributor to Aeon magazine and her latest essay ‘The Joy of Intimacy’; was their most popular essay in February 2020. Other Aeon essays include ‘The Lost Children’ and an essay on female jealousy, to be published in autumn 2020. She is also published by Granta (‘The Fog and the Sea’; ‘It’s Only Skin’) and The Real Story; MIR Online; Litro: and Hinterland.
