We’re pleased to announce our Summer ‘Nature’ season for Quay Words 2021, we’ll be celebrating our surroundings and enjoying the return of blended events and workshops back at our home, the Exeter Custom House.

Our writer-in-residence Naomi Westerman will be exploring the nature of the Quayside in a series of outdoor workshops, followed by a Quay Voices event with participants on Wednesday 28th July.

We have fantastic author events programmed, kicking off with John Wedgewood Clarke reading poems and talking about his Red River Project on 9th June. On 11th August the brilliant Anita Sethi will be reading from her work I Belong Here, a journey of reclamation through the natural landscapes of the North, brilliantly exploring identity, nature, place and belonging. In both instances, you can book a place either to be in our socially distanced audience, or watch via live-stream.

We also have a range of fantastic workshops and masterclasses. Acclaimed poet Pascale Petit will be running our 5-week writing course at Exeter Custom House – the Trance of Nature – giving you the tools to capture your own nature poems. On 31st July Adrian Cooper of Little Toller Books will be giving an exclusive masterclass and one-to-one feedback session on your nature writing and creative non-fiction. We’re pleased to welcome back Caleb Parkin this season for a series of Nature-themed Poetry and Reminiscence Cabarets!

We’ll also be making the most of the outdoors with a series of events for families at the Transit Shed on the Quayside. The award-winning PaddleBoat Theatre will be presenting Rustle on 17th and 24th July with a post-show interactive workshop. We’ll also have a day of WILD storytelling from Clive Pig on 21st August.
