Quay Words is joined by Exeter City Supporters Trust and sports writer David Goldblatt to discuss the importance of Exeter City FC being a supporter owned football club. Join us for a discussion on the importance of democratic ownership in sport, how communities can be involved with their club and how football supports the wellbeing of Exeter. We will also be joined by Rob Casey, Bard of Exeter FC to share his poetry on the beautiful game.

Exeter City Supporters Trust has been influencing Exeter City FC (the Club) for the past 20 years. Originally formed in 2000 to assist in the payment of a player’s salary it went on to purchase a majority shareholding (53.11%) in 2003, and in 2014 obtaining voting parity on the club’s Board of Directors, allowing at present 3 Trustees and the Trust Chairman to sit on that board.

David Goldblatt was born in London in 1965, and now lives in Bristol, the Bermuda Triangle of football success. In 2015 he won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award for The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football and the Sports Story of the Year at the Foreign Press Association Media Awards for his article for the Guardian Long Read, The prison where murderers play for Manchester United.

Rob Casey has been Exeter City’s club poet, the ‘Bard of ECFC’, since 2016. He produces original poetry for the club’s award winning matchday programme ‘The Grecian’, published for each home game as well as online, and has collaborated on multiple videos. As a stand-up poet, writer, performer and host he can often be seen and heard delivering verse at spoken word events across the South West, and has produced commissioned writing for the Football Association, BBC / National Poetry Day and ITV.
