Melissa Chemam’s book Out of the Comfort Zone follows the journey of the band Massive Attack into art and music. It retraces how the history of their city, Bristol, shaped their unique sound and multicultural innovations. It then studies how the emergency of the band helped Bristol’s entire underground scene to emerge.

Melissa will be in conversation with Patrick Cunningham, Director of Exeter Phoenix about the book.

Freelance journalist, reporter, radio producer and writer, Melissa Chemam studied comparative literature and political sciences, and has lived in Miami, Paris, London, Bristol, Nairobi, and Bangui, in Central African Republic, travelling to more than 40 countries in the past 15 years. She’s worked with the BBC World Service, Deutsche Welle, RFI, Reuters, Think Africa Press, CIRCA Art Magazine. She writes fiction and non-fiction, inspired by African-European relations, refugee rights, social change, music, art & politics. She also has a passion for African art. Her first non-fiction book, Massive Attack – Out of the Comfort Zone, was published in the UK in March 2019. She’s currently working on her first novel.
