Write your own brand of middle-grade fiction with children’s author Jane Elson. In this five-week course, Jane will lead you through creative games and exercises to feed your imagination. The course will explore how to build characters, ways of making the smaller characters in your book believable, creating the world in your book and tools to carry on writing after the course has finished.

About the tutor

After performing as an actress and comedy improviser, Jane fell into writing stories and plays. Her books have won many literary awards including Peters Book of the Year two years running. Her debut novel A Room Full of Chocolate was longlisted for the Branford Boase Award and she has twice been nominated for the Carnegie Medal.

Jane is loud and proud about her dyslexia and over the years has mentored many neurodiverse young people, promoting the gift of alternative thinking. She was honoured to be named as one of the top 50 Influential Neurodivergent Women by Women Beyond The Box. Jane’s niche in the market is writing about those children that are often not written about. In her latest book Storm Horse, Jane returns to the world of the Beckham Estate, also featured in the multi-award winning How to Fly with Broken Wings and Will You Catch Me?

Jane is a trustee for the charity Nacoa and wrote Lockdown Nell featuring Nell from Will You Catch Me? to encourage children trapped with alcohol dependent parents in the pandemic to phone Nacoa’s helpline. Nell has now marched out of the pages of Will You Catch Me? and gone global, used by alcohol agencies throughout the world including the Hazelden Betty Ford Children’s Programme. Jane was recently asked to read Lockdown Nell in the Houses of Parliament for Nacoa at the Stafford Ward Memorial Lecture with Liam Byrne MP, Jonathan Ashworth MP and Nacoa Patron Calum Best. Jane is also an advocate for the rescue charity All Dogs Matter, a charity close to her heart.
